This past week at school the boys learned about the celebration of Dia de las Muertos.
I must admit I was a little stumped why they did it this week rather than on Nov 1 as its usually celebrated but I think maybe they were trying to get it away from Halloween to avoid confusion.
For those of you who don't know Dia de las Muertas is Day of the Dead. Its a celebration to remember friends and family members who have died. Traditional events are building private altars honoring the deceased using sugar skulls, marigolds, and the favorite food/drinks of the departed and visiting graves with these as gifts. They also leave possessions of the deceased.
So all day they got to do fun stuff like creating tombstones to remember loved ones. Logan made his with a remembrance to Gramma Winky, AJ and Harley
Then they got to decorate their own sugar skulls.
There was also a band who played in the cafeteria. All the kids loved them.
And of course some face painting.
Also going on is the annual Scarecrow Festival in Cambria. They had their own DOD scarecrow.
This one is outside the Ball and Skein
Outside the liquor store.
St Mary Meads
The scarecrow peleton made by the local bike club the Slabtown rollers. They actually pedal!
I think this guy is the biggest one.
A happy clown
The tennis club made this one
I don't know who made this one but he is at the corner of Main and Cambria Drive.
One of the first scarecrows when this whole thing started. I think 3 years ago it began.
There is a whole section of Wizard of Oz
We only made it through one section of town. We still have to see all of them in the West End and on Moonstone Beach Drive. Maybe this weekend,.....
